You have a substantial responsibility to ensure
that you make the most of your English studies. Before the commencement of
your English studies in the Department of Business Administration of Food
and Agricultural Enterprises, you should ensure that you have read the
prospectus given to you by the University and this site on English Studies.
There are a range of academic and social issues to which you will have to
adapt if you want to feel part of the new community. Please read the
following sections carefully.
Academic Behaviour
You should be realistic and expect to have both
good and bad experiences in the new academic environment. You should be
willing to learn and recognize the fact that you are not familiar with
certain language skills. Awareness of ignorance is the prerequisite for
learning. You should not get into the habit of hungering for factual
knowledge. Within the curriculum of the English language courses in the
Department of Business Administration of Food and Agricultural Enterprises,
you should not study set textbooks to achieve good marks but rather you are
encouraged to practice language skills in order to sharpen your critical
and creative thinking. It is particularly useful to fully understand the
terminology used in study patterns and assessment. For example, you should
realize that plagiarism is a severe form of cheating. Please read the
following sections on academic regulations that you are expected to follow.
Academic Regulations
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the use of another person's ideas or
expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source. The word
comes from the Latin word plagiarus (=
kidnapper), and Alexander Lindey defines it as
'the false assumption of authorship: the wrongful act of taking the product
of another person's mind and presenting it as one's own.' (Plagiarism and
originality, New York: Harper, 1952, 2).
For the English courses you will be assigned to
submit essays. Unfortunately many students reproduce someone else's work by
copying from books and the internet.
- Bear in mind that you are
expected to produce an original piece of work acknowledging the
sources of information. Copying form unauthorized material constitute
unacceptable breach of academic conduct.
- It is very important for
you to understand the difference between keeping notes from sources
and your own interpretations and ideas.
- You should make every
endeavor to contribute to the literature and understand the process of
research.

Deadlines
It is your responsibility to hand in your work on
time. Your English tutor usually gives you a deadline for your work in
class. If you need any extensions please pop in your tutor's office to
check this possibility with her.
Examinations
During the exams you are expected to behave
appropriately. There will be invigilators who will make all the
arrangements for the exams in co-operation with your examiner.
- Please be there on time. If
you arrive late you will not be permitted to sit the exams.
- Bring with you your
students' identity cards and place them on your desk for inspection.
- All students who sit exams
for the English courses should sign the attendance register on the
examination day.
- Switch off your mobile
phones and do not communicate with each other in any way.
- During the first half an
hour, you are not permitted to submit your exam paper.
- Smoking is not permitted in
the examination room
- Food and drinks are not
permitted in the examination room. Bottled
water is permitted.
- You are not permitted to
get out of the examination room during the exams.
- If you attempt to copy
material from another students' script, there will be a minor warning
from your invigilator. If you continue to behave in an improper way,
you might be asked to move in a different seat.
- If you are caught cheating,
you will be awarded a zero mark. Where the possession of use of
illegal material is identified, such material will be confiscated.
Social Behaviour
You should behave adult like and take
responsibility of your own actions. University is a miniature of the
everyday Greek society and being able to adjust in it paves the way to your
proper preparation to live and work in the real world upon graduation. Do
not get influenced by other students' actions. You are all different people
with individual foibles. Part of education is to mould
your character and become a responsible and full of integrity individual.
English is a useful course, which will help you in your future professional
career and will also make it possible for you to get to know other cultures
when traveling abroad.
